Ok now you are freaking me out... Didnt know we could send 'messages' here!

You know I checked out all the trigger pages first before i started working yet went straight over the existing page. I must be going blind. Anyway thanks for that, still working on it now.

Hope ive done this reply correctly...

References

Just to confirm (eviota queenslandica) you would like all references to be set out the way you just sent me? -Just so you dont have to chase after me each edit is all.... Thanks

Oops missed the question mark at the end, yes i did reference it from there.

Image Category

Got your message. How do I have a user category for images, for the ones I take/create? for this one http://www.masa.asn.au/masawiki/index.php?title=Image:Kalkwasser_Reactor_Diagram.jpg -Smcskim 17:40, 16 October 2007 (PDT)

That is correct, any image that you take or generate put it in that category. Simply create one based on your first and last name. See examples such as Category:Jimmy Anderson for what you need to put on the category page. Have a look at the RTAW Reefpedia:Images page and those that are currently uploaded. You can then see how things are currently styled, categorised etc. --Dr DBW | talk 18:01, 16 October 2007 (PDT)
Thanks mate. Done. Thanks for the ongoing tips - hope my contributions useful despite formatting errors!--Smcskim 20:06, 16 October 2007 (PDT)
NP at all. Those "errors" are small, minor ones anyway :-) --Dr DBW | talk 20:14, 16 October 2007 (PDT)

Incorrect ID

Dallas - this jpeg - Chromis_viridis.jpg - is Black axial Chromis Chromis atripectoralis

That has now been fixed. --Dr DBW | talk 15:53, 28 January 2008 (PST)

Re: Fish size category

Dallas I think we'll only need the list, once its done its relatively static and I forgot about the categories until we into making the list then flirted with it briefly. I'll keep it up best I can as there are still gaping holes everywhere. Ross

References

Most is general knowledge from past reading or a paraphrasing of 3-4 websites ;P - with luck there are no direct quotes in that lot. Weird how much misinformation is actually out there though! (i.e male/female watanabei description - there are quite a few sites out there that have it back to front!)

Funny how much time you can spend putting one of those pages together and at the end of the day it just looks so piddly. Some of them really need a bit of fleshing out...

Cheers,

Guv.

Sumps

I think the three sump designs should be removed or edited as with a 3" DSB they misrepresent the common DSB philosophy.

Sorry everyone, this is my first attempt at the reefpedia and this is probably not the right place for this comment. Editing here is quite beyond me but I feel that the three sump pictures from the link 'sump' should not be presented in the current formate. They do not convey the best DSB application information. - Steve Campbell | talk.

What page are you actually referring to? You really need to link to it. And if you think there should be alternatives, then would be best if you can provide the alternatives, since we are limited by what people provide. There are heaps of places would be better stuff to put in, but can't do that until someone actually provides it. Plus, I would recommend you actually discuss this thing on the RTAW Forums, in the RTAW Reefpedia Editor's Forum. As you can tell, there is very little activity here in RTAW Reefpedia, so if you actually want a response and a discussion to happen, you have to do it on the forums. --Dr DBW | talk 10:58, 25 August 2008 (EST)

Pest/Diseases

Will keep adding headings for a couple of weeks, then will have a better view of how to organise the main page. Main page will probably get a little messy till then.

Thanks for fixing the punctuation.

NP. It will need something though :) --Dr DBW | talk 17:48, 2 November 2008 (EST)

Hi Dallas,

Can't seem to fix the 2nd ref. link on this page http://www.masa.asn.au/masawiki/index.php/Skeleton_Eroding_Band_%28SEB%29 The "os26g-21" should be part of the link..... just can't get it to join.

If you get a chance to look at it....thanks

Chris

Issue is the quotation marks. There will be a way around it, looking into it. --Dr DBW | talk 17:49, 2 November 2008 (EST)
Need to use the percentage sign followed by number 22, %22, that is the escaped form of it and how you use it in URLs. --Dr DBW | talk 17:54, 2 November 2008 (EST)

Centropyge woodheadi species validity

C. woodheadi is considered as a synonym of C. heraldi.

http://research.calacademy.org/research/ichthyology/catalog/fishcatmain.asp

Is there any objections to this?

Should this page be deleted, redirected to C. heraldi or stay as is?

If first 2 options, are these in my editing ability and if so could you provide a quick reference to how.

Thanks dallas

Chris

Misspelt Genus

http://www.masa.asn.au/masawiki/index.php/Actinea

Should be spelt Actinia.

What is the best way to approach fixing the genus and species page headings?

Thanks

Chris

You just have to go in move pages and templates, change text on the pages. Best way is to work from the bottom and work back up the line. I'll do it now, you can see how did it etc by looking at the sequence on Special:Recentchanges. --Dr DBW | talk 18:38, 12 January 2009 (EST)

Test of A to Z index

upload image

Hi Dallas, When using the "Upload a new version of this file" on an image page, do you need to change the image title, having trouble using the feature and unable to find a specific help topic.

Thanks.

Chris

Also, is this the appropriate place for such questions?

Yeah, best to ask me directly. None of the other guys know it in and out ;-) When you upload a new version, you don't have to do anything. Just click on the link on the image page, browse to the new image, then upload. You will get a warning about name already existing, but click through that, new image will be uploaded. All the existing text on the image page will remain. --Dr DBW | talk 18:02, 21 January 2009 (EST)
Hmmm. did that and the same image appeared on the uploaded file. Will have another look tonight.--Saltydog 21:58, 21 January 2009 (EST)
Did you clear your cache or reload the image? --Dr DBW | talk 22:31, 21 January 2009 (EST)
The existing and new images are on different computors. Tried again to reload same result. On the warning page the new file appears with the text "existing image" in the image box. After uploading the old image appears, in all logs.

See: http://www.masa.asn.au/masawiki/index.php/Image:Actinia_tenebrosa_3.jpg --Saltydog 08:49, 22 January 2009 (EST)

what is image 3 meant to show? What was the old image and what is the new one? To me, I see about 15-20 anemones inbetween the grape seaweed on light coloured rock. --Dr DBW | talk 17:23, 22 January 2009 (EST)
Images are now showing as they should. Thanks. --Saltydog 07:08, 24 January 2009 (EST)

Taxonavigation

See http://www.masa.asn.au/masawiki/index.php/Ostreoida

Three Taxonavigation headings and wide spacing between class - order - family. Got me stumped ATM.

You had the taxonav start and finish templates within the order etc templates. The taxonav templates are only for use on the pages, sets up the top heading, blue background etc. Have fixed it --Dr DBW | talk 17:29, 22 January 2009 (EST)
Thanks. --Saltydog 07:10, 24 January 2009 (EST)

Image name

Hi Dallas, Went to upload new file in the following image page: http://www.masa.asn.au/masawiki/index.php/Image:Trochus_sp_4.jpg

Change the above file name to Astralium tentoriiformis and saved the page. New file has uploaded correctly but the above incorrect file is still existing and needs deleting.

Cheers

Chris

Done --Dr DBW | talk 17:50, 4 February 2009 (EST)

OK, I think I have it sussed. There is also our own page on the different fish species that we list our own information on. I have added one there as well, although not with much information, just feeling my way round at the moment. Check it out. http://www.masa.asn.au/masawiki/index.php/Plagiotremus_laudandus_laudandus

Image ID edit

http://www.masa.asn.au/masawiki/index.php/Image:Amphiprion_frenatus_1.jpg#filelinks The black on the pectoral fins make this Amphiprion melanopus (my mistake), the page-heading needs changing, I have changed the other details already. Thanks Chris--Saltydog 04:59, 8 March 2009 (EDT)

Can't move images with the current version of MediaWiki, when update it should be able to. So at the moment have to delete and upload again. I have fixed it up. --Dr DBW | talk 19:34, 8 March 2009 (EDT)
Thanks. Thought it may have been an editors function.--Saltydog 20:13, 8 March 2009 (EDT)

Genus templates mistake

I've mucked up on Halichoeres, ie. the taxonav stuff.
I copied another one ( Cirrhilabrus ) like a template but it won't work for me. What am I doing wrong?

Whoops, forgot my sig --Miskairal 21:42, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

? You have to create the Halichoeres template, they just don't magically appear ;-) I have created it. Not 100% sure what you are asking with the second sentence? --Dr DBW | talk 00:06, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
I wanted to know how to get the taxonavigation onto the page? I still don't get this. All you've written on the Halichoeres page is == Taxonavigation == <noinclude> </noinclude> (and don't ask me to get that formatted how it looks because I tried ;) ) and yet the taxonavigation box all appears. So then I go to the template link and all you have written there is Labridae :::::::::::::Genus: Halichoeres so I still can't understand how to "create" this whole thing.
So we can do one of two things here. Either I can leave you to do it one the rare occasion it needs doing or you'll have to write it down step by step as a dummies guide to creating Genus pages. Take you pick :) --Miskairal 09:43, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
No, on the Halichoeres page is:

Halichoeres  ::::::::::::::Species: H. chrysus - H. margaritaceus - H. melanurus

I think you have edited a section, rather than the page. Be careful with that, as if there is a heading that comes from a template, and you click on the edit link on the right, it will take you to the template, not the page you are currently on and actually want to edit.
It is all done with templates. Using the squiggly brackets, that calls a template and inserts it into the page. Magic with templates, is if at some point something changes, then all you have to do is change it in one place, then all places that use it change. Imagine that the Cnidaria phylum changed name. The name is used on between 250 and 500 pages as part of the taxonav headings, imagine having to change all of those! If it did change, then all we would have to do is alter the Template:Cnidaria page, and that is it.
So for any genus, family etc page, the taxonav calls a template to start the taxonav (that sets up the heading, background colouring), the template for the genus / family which links back through the classification, list of species / genera within that genus / family, then close the taxonav section.
I would recommend you look at the pages, see how it is done, check histories to see what I have added, how the page has changed with those additions etc. You pick up much more by doing that. --Dr DBW | talk 22:39, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
A hhhh, I didn't know about the clicking the Edit link on the right. That'll make a big difference. I guess we can equate the templates to css files called from within html. I tried to find out how to do it through all the links on the left but nothing seemed to explain it and I'm so slow at learning new stuff that I was trying to find a quick way to do it.
Here's the thing though. You have answered my question here on YOUR talk page which you can delete at any time (I think I've got that right) so if I come back in a month and want to read this again, what if you have deleted it? Is there somewhere I can save snippets of info like this for future reference, like can I create my own little old page of miskairal's FAQs? --Miskairal 10:03, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
That is the case with any page, you or I can delete / edit / move any information anywhere / anytime. However, your own userpage is one that you can use with as you want, in principle. I can edit it, as can any other user as well. But, even if somethis is deleted, it is never gone. Records are kept of everything. Want to see what the Main Page looked like 17:37, 27 October 2005, then simple go to http://www.masa.asn.au/masawiki/index.php?title=Main_Page&oldid=380. First incarnation of your SideBar? See http://www.masa.asn.au/masawiki/index.php?title=User:Miskairal/Sidebar&oldid=18180 What most people tend to do though is keep something at User:Miskairal. You can see something like that one my page at User:Dr DBW --Dr DBW | talk 21:56, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

More Taxonav Stuff

This time it is Dasyatidae. I don't know how to do it, sorry. --Miskairal 08:00, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

What is it that you want done? Set up the taxonav and headings etc? --Dr DBW | talk 00:28, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
Yes please. I don't remember how hard I tried to figure it out, I think I was about done in by then and maybe didn't try too hard. --Miskairal 09:27, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Created. As noted above, check the recent changes page, see which pages I have created, then check the history for the page, see what I have added, what it does to the page etc. That should help you understand what is going on. --Dr DBW | talk 22:56, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Oh and this little critter Taeniura lymma has missing parts eg. in his taxonav box his Class is a red link and I'm not even going to go there. I might get to the Genus one as I think I can work that out. --Miskairal 08:19, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

That is because that is a sub-class, not a class. Fixed. http://www.masa.asn.au/masawiki/index.php?title=Taeniura_lymma&diff=19032&oldid=19011 --Dr DBW | talk 00:28, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing everything. I didn't know the class for the Taeniura and I think I just ran out of inclination to go looking ;) I still haven't done the genus page. --Miskairal 09:27, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
I use http://species.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page to help with stuff like that. That is first look, then are links provided in the editor's section that are more specialised. But tend to find what you need from that. --Dr DBW | talk 22:58, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Fish Recommendations

Im going to keep working on the recommendations for small tanks page...its a big task...will do some more later on today but probably should get back to work on my PhD stuff. My aim is to have it all linked in with the list of species we have on the reefpedia, then I might start addressing the individual fish types which don't have any information on them, so that when people actually click on the link they will get information on the appropriate species. If you stumble accross anything that needs to be added/changed feel free to do it, and Ill try and ensure it all ties in.

Yeah I do, just got to get it in the right form, and add a couple others which assisted.

Yeah that looks much better and easier to read (also looks a much more professional format). I'm still trying to work out all the formatting stuff, so probably will be a little slow to get going again lol.

Blanke file pages

Contest images

Category:Competition Entries. Was this waiting for someone to do?

Are competion entries filed here with username or do the entries take the normal upload protocol (full person name)???

Thanks Chris--Saltydog 13:58, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

That was there for when we were getting the images and the competition associated with it. I used it to keep track of the number of entries that people had. That is no longer happening, it has expired. We may use it for the current caresheet competition? Files / images are still put into the person's category, just added a number of entry category to the person's category to keep track of who had how many. --Dr DBW | talk 23:03, 14 April 2010 (UTC)

Testing

1,2,3

According to WoRMS there are 2 Genicanthus melanospilus and Genicanthus melanospilos.

I was looking at WoRMS to compare the list of species on the site. I only put it up there because it said that [|Genicanthus melanospilus] and [|Genicanthus melanospilos] were both species, I imagine that they could both be the same though.

Thanks for that, would save a bit of time that way.
