Introduction
This is a genus of anemones that should be removed at first sight within a marine aquarium. Anemonia sp. are tougher than Aiptasia sp. (which is a more common pest anemone encountered), so can be difficult to remove from a system if they reach plague proportions. Thankfully they tend to reproduce at a slower rate than Aiptasia sp., but will still out compete most other corals, stinging them.
If any of these are detected within a system, it is best to promptly remove / eliminate these as soon as possible. Waiting can make the removal much more time consuming and difficult.
Methods of Removal
Common control methods include:
- injection into the anemones body using an intravenous syringe containing kalkwasser (calcium hydroxide), hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide. The less severe options of hot water or vinegar that are successful for Aiptasia sp. more than often fail totally.
- physical removal of the anemone by peeling it off the rock using a knife or credit card. Their tissue is quite tough, so as long as can get under the edge of the foot, it is not too hard to peel them off totally.
- removal of rocks they live on, and hence the Anemonia
