Introduction
Commonly referred to as Cardinalfish.
Characteristics
Small moderately elongate fish with two dorsal fins, a large lateral line, large mouth and large eyes. Most species remain hidden during the day and venture out to feed on zooplankton or small benthic invertebrates at night. Some species form dense aggregations above and amount branching corals. Males incubate the eggs in the mouth until hatching. [1]

There are currently 207 described species found in 22 genera belonging to the family Apogonidae. Apogon has the largest number of species. The most common genera are:
