Introduction

Typically referred to as a FOWLR, an abbreviation for Fish Only With Live Rock. It is a common way of referring to a fish only marine system.

The main focus of this type of system is, of course, fish, with liverock used to construct a reef structure and provide the biological filtration. This allows fish that are not compatible with corals and other invertebrates to be maintained in the system.

Advantages with a system of this type is that the low level requirements of some water parameters such as nitrate and phosphate can be relaxed and allowed at higher levels. Whereas, if it was a full reef system, containing invertebrates such as corals, some of the species would struggle under such conditions.
