Hello from WA
Hi all, I just bought a house that came with a 400l FOWLR, had lots of algae and 1 little tang swimming about. Looking forward to building it up to mixed reef. First time in the hobby, but I've got to learn fast as our tank is already established.

Hi and Welcome to MASA.
Depending on the condition of the tank it may be worth selling the fish and starting the tank again. That way you can be in control of the cycle and with some fresh rock get rid of the algae.
Otherwise patience and time are best. Water changes will reduce the available nutrients and eventually starve out the algae.
Good Luck - hope you find some good info here and feel free to ask lots of questions.
