Flame Angel probs....

Post by Rhynobar »

Hi
I have a flame angel in QT for the past 8 days. Looked good from lfs and was eating brine.
Flame started eating brine after a couple of days and continued up until 2 days ago. He did break out with a couple of white spots and a tiny bit of fin rot.
I have been dosing with paraguard since day 2 and am using minimal amounts of ammolock.
Parameters are,
Salinity 1.020
Slight ammonia reading
Trates 0
Trites 0
Noticed ph a bit low. Was thinking because of dosing meds.
Have done 2 x 50% water changes so far.

Any advice would be awesome.
Thanks

Rhyno. :D

What meds are you adding and why? I ask this because If you walk into some LFS they will sell you whatever rubbish they have on the shelf

i've always been a fan of good water and good food.

The ammonia might be uneaten food. so be sure to get that out if he's being picky.

Has the fish got lots of hiding places?

:wavey: hi rhyno,

Paraguard won't cure marine white spot, if thats what what the fish has. Praziquantel is handy for many flukes; freshwater dips and formalin take care of he rest (if needed).

A couple of visible spots doesn't rule out a gill infestation, especially if the flame is off his food. This makes it harder for the fish to breathe, too. So, dont let the temperature rise above 24-25. Finally, ammonia is extremely toxic to the fish so if the pH is 7.8-8.0 in a qt, that helps versus high pH. Water changes and Prime help more.

If it turns out the fish has marine WS, tank transfer method is pretty effective if you can do it. Alternately, hyposalinity or copper (Cupramine only) work too, but with less margin for error. You need to be pretty sure of what the fish has before treatment.

HTH and good luck with hatever you decide to do.
