first attempt at a nano

Post by swazzle »

Introduction:
Hey some may remember from my threads for my build for my bigger tank which is still underway just the longest house build in history. a friend set me up with a nano to play with in the meantime which may work well to get some corals going that may be fragged or swapped into the bigger tank when it is finally ready. I did plan on keeping it sit longer with not much in it, but friend that gave me the tank had some corals that were pretty sickly and couldn't keep up with maintenance so when my parameters were reading for had to give it a go. corals have been in the tank for one day and have started to look much much happier already. also grabbed a couple hermits and snails.

System Objectives: have a go at this nano style of reefing, and as mentioned possibly begin some coral propagation for the planned bigger tank.

System Type: mixed reef, currently no fish though. waiting to find what i want

Display System: not entirely sure somewhere around the 50L mark acrylic bow front with rear build in sump

Strike up Date: 28/5/2017

Display Lighting: elcheapo 165w full spectrum chinese led

Stand: custom build stand from my friend that gave me the tank.

Hood: no hood

Sump: rear sump unknown literage

Refugium: would like to throw some chaeto in the rear sump area not as yet though

Support systems:

System Water: artificial salt water, rodi with blue treasure sps salt

Display Water circulation: jebao sw-2

Return Pump: old pump had sitting around 2500L

Skimmer: currently not yet arrived marine sources nano 150

Evaporation Top Up: Currently manual

Chemical Support:
no chemical support just frequent small water changes

Current Water Chemistry: If applicable
Nitrates: <2ppm
Phosphates: nil measurable
Alkalinity: 7.7dKH
Calcium: 400ppm
Salinity / Specific Gravity: 35ppt
Magnesuim: 1250ppm

I really want a boxfish, I wanted to put him in my bigger tank but seen as I have this now he can live in here till hopefully he lives long enough and gets big and transferred.

Originally I was thinking a pair of black clowns and a blue boxfish but now I'm thinking it might be a bit small for the 3.

Picked up some new coral

Some Chaeto for a section in the rear sump, overflow combs to keep it in its section.

And a new snail for the tank aswell to help clean the sand.

Still waiting on skimmer and uv filter to turn up before I put a fish in. Was no thinking just one blue boxfish and one clown

Good old bunnings, little clip on desk lamp for $20 for the chaeto section.

Did my first regular water change today. Deciding to try and go for 15-20% changes as the only way I'm using to keep calcium, magnesium etc in check is through water changes. It makes life a lot easier when a 20% water change is only 10L haha

Picked up a new coral, I know it doesn't mean much but nearly every coral I've got for this little tank has opened up or had polyp extension very very quickly after going in. Makes me feel like my parameters are about as good as they can get.

Skimmer and uv turned up yesterday, tiny little nano skimmer is pretty cute looking. so will get them up and running by the weekend and hopefully find an actual fish inhabitant on the weekend aswell.

Skimmer in pulling out skimmate after a day or so of running in. Hooked up the uv, it's not pretty to try and fit it into a nano but it's working.

Got a pair of very small less than an inch clowns just acclimating ATM

And picked up a new coral, dipped and put in.

Moved a few corals, and bought a clam. The photos don't do him justice of his beauty! Has a fair bit of blue mixed in with the purple.
