Pipefish tail issues

Post by hanzelz »

In the last 24 hours my banded pipe fish has developed something that looks quite serious on his tail.
The last 1cm has gone white and the beautiful leaf shape with the red circle within it has disappeared...not sure whats left of it.
His back seems more arched than normal but he is eating and aggressively seeking food.

The environment is a 70 litre tank with the just one pair of pipes, no other fish.
I feed heavily with fresh brine (2nd daily) and they eat mulched up Mysis daily but in small quantities.
I have heaps of chaeto in there which supports 100s of brine shrimp to grow out.

Only change is introduction of 3 peppermint shrimp to help deal with 3 flowers of aptasia. One has since died....might be two, not sure.
I did not quarantine these shrimp.

Looks like a nasty external bacterial, not something you can really treat in a reef. May be too late for this fish, but getting it into a hospital tank where you can use antibiotics or broad antibacterials is best bet IMHO.

As a last sort of ditch option, you could try topical application of a antiseptic like bettadine. A small amount dabbed directly on wound with a cotton bud would be an option. Trick is to keep the amount of bettadine getting into the aquarium as minimal as possible as its not "reef safe". A hospital tank really is the go.
