The big fridge

Post by oceanarium »

Introduction:
The big fridge comes from my partner Leanne’s nick name for our prop room a 15 x 15m shed made of cool room material. We decided on the construction for energy effiecy of heating and cooling.

We are on a pretty steep learning curve getting it all together part the reason for the TJ I am sure many of the enthusiasts here may set us on the right track when we stray :poke: also we would like to see more coral prop in Aus so hopefully we can help with some info along the way.

System Objectives:
Our objective is to supply an environmentally friendly alternative to wild collect corals and make some of the more rarely collected corals more readily available.

System Type:
So far we have a Q system, a brood stock / larva rearing system for fish a coral brood / grow out system and a experimental 200ltr DIY synthetic sea water / cultured specimen display tank.

Display System:

Strike up Date:
The room went up early 2010

Specifications:
To date : Q system 2500ltrs, fish 2000ish ltrs, coral grow system 1 6000ltrs and display 200ltrs

Lighting: LED on all the coral with some T5HO on the fish for the anemones.
Stand: Stand specifications.

Support systems:

System Water: Natural salt water for coral and brood stock, DIY artificial salt water on the display

Water circulation: In tank water circulation on the Q system is surge buckets. Coral system 1 use Tunzie stream pumps.

Return Pump: Return via Performance pro pumps as they are very energy effiecient for the job

Skimmer: Tunzie, various on the systems but stoked with the 6080 on the coral system :-D

Evaporation Top Up:
Top off via timed pumps

water changes:
Auto water changes via timed pumps to waste and float valves to bring NSW in.

Chemical Support:

GHL dosing units adding Calcium, KH, Mg and Iodine also adding Brightwell 'koral color' to the coral system.

Current Water Chemistry:
Nitrates: 1ppm
Phosphates: 0.07
Alkalinity: 9DKH
Calcium: 420ppm
Salinity / Specific Gravity: 1026
Magnesuim: 1300

haa no secrets here imy (That i am telling you about) ;) I took a few today but the LED's don’t spill a lot of light around the room, so they did not turn out so good, difficult to get the perspective of the tanks in one shot as most banks have tanks back to back.

The brood system...

We set this up in mind to breed clowns though since we have sent most our clown brood to a aquaculture teaching institution, and we plan to buy in the clowns as our passion really lays in the culture of corals. Though I have kept all my Banggai’s to breed from. :)

The new coral grow out area...

I only gassed this up with water last week to move our coral brood to for now till we are licenced to culture corals there is still lighting power provision to add on some more tanks as yet

The Q system...

Works well for us to vet any unwanted visitors :cop:

We use the Chinese Bsled units... I would class the growth as promising but school is out in regards to the best choice. :wavey: Simon
