Classified Ads Guidelines

Access Eligibility

The Classified Ads is a free service provided by RTAW to its users subject to the following:
  1. No restrictions of use by bona fide members of a MASx organisation;
  2. Access to Classifieds Ads for the purpose of posting by all other users is subject to the user having made 15 No. posts in the Forums to the satisfaction of the administrator. Dummy posting will not be considered.

Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware!)

The onus is on those selling and purchasing items within the classified ads to protect their own interests. This includes a responsibility on the buyer and seller to investigate the transaction (including the state of the goods and reputation of the buyer/seller) to their satisfaction, before depositing funds, sending items or undertaking any other trading activity.

MASA, MASA Committee members, RTAW Forum Administrators, RTAW Forum Moderators or any representatives of MASA cannot be held responsible for any trading, or incidents that occur as a result thereof.

It is recommended that buyer's and seller's agree on a detailed description of the goods (age, usage, wear etc.) before finalising a transaction and that parcels sent via Australia Post, or any other courier, be registered and insured.

Advertisement Guidelines
  1. Please use the correct selection in the "Prefix" drop down box to indicate whether your ad is:
    • WTB: (wanted to buy)
    • S: (for sale)
    • T: (for trade)
    • S/T: (for sale or trade)
    • FREE: Free items

This will be auto filled into your ad by the software in RED text. When your item/s are sold, please edit your advertisement and change the status to sold.
  2. Ensure that the location field in your profile is correctly filled in as this is what will be used to inform prospective buyers of your location. Alternatively state your (or the goods) location details clearly within your advertisement description.
  3. Please keep your subject lines as descriptive as possible, by stating the items for sale in the post title where possible, or where a large number of items are for sale, indicating as such.
  4. Your description of the item must be complete and accurate. Items that are defective, even if only minor / cosmetic must be mentioned so that prospective buyers can take this into consideration. Normal wear and tear on a second hand item is to be expected, but it is better to state a defect at the time of sale.
  5. It is recommended to include some pictures of the item for trade, which will give the receiver an idea of what to expect. You can upload a picture directly by using the Image Uploader, supported file types are gif, jpg, png) Format your image to be no wider than 400 pixels.
  6. Use the Create Thumbnail (or TinyPic) uploader to show a thumbnail image preview of the item alongside of your advertisement.
  7. Enter your email address if you would prefer payment via PayPal automatically to the entered address, and select the currency type from the drop down menu.
  8. Select a suitable category for your advertisement listing from the drop down menu, rather than scroll through all advertisements a buyer may choose to only view ads for a particular category ie; Skimmer. The classifieds are for marine aquaria goods only, advertisements of any other nature will be removed without notice.
  9. Select the appropriate radio button(s) if you would like to enable comments and if you would like to be emailed from users who comment.
  10. Do not place multiple adds of the same item, duplicate ads may be removed without notice.
  11. When selling livestock, please use scientific names rather than common names to avoid possible confusion and / or disagreements post-sale.
  12. Do not bid on or comment on an item if you have no intention of purchasing it. Unnecessary comments will be removed from advertisements.
  13. No commercial postings or sales! That is what the General Commercial Forum is for. No posts by businesses are allowed in the classifieds, which includes employees of businesses advertising the store at which they work.
  14. Buy and sell at your own risk, caveat emptor. The classified are not actively reviewed by MASA, the administrators and moderators of RTAW and their agents, product resolution is to be between buyer and seller, posts or threads about specific purchases from the classified in the RTAW forums are not allowed.
Negative Comments in the Classifieds

Always follow the RTAW Rules and Regulations when commenting. Comments of a negative nature are unwarranted, unnecessary and will be removed from public view. They add nothing to this popular and valuable service that is offered by RTAW Forums to it's members.

Do not comment in advertisements if you have no intention of making a purchase.

Finally, HAPPY TRADING!

Why are my ads being deleted?

Post by MASA »

So you are wondering why your ads keep getting deleted?

The common reasons are:
  • Using thumbnails that are too large (caused by placing the image code presented for an image into the thumbnail entry), which impacts on the Classified index layout.
  • Putting FS / For Sale / WTB / Trade / Free etc. into the subject line. This is now redundant and is handled by the prefix box, use the subject line to describe the item(s).
  • Inappropriate numbers or text in the pricing field, e.g. 1234567890
  • Your item is inappropriate for the Classifieds, e.g. DIY 240V equipment, non-aquarium related etc.
  • You are a commercial seller or seeking commercial services.
Due to limitations in time and number of ads that do not follow the rules and the number of ads being made to the classifieds, it simply is not possible to provide every user with notification of the reason for removal of the ad(s). Hence the warning when you post an ad of "Ads failing to comply with the rules will simply be deleted, without warning"
