A more then welcome thought too! I did have this thought as well, have been trying to find an answer but i guess maybe only time will tell? If it does happen I will have to do some sort of precautions possibly hood the top of the tank. Enclose the sump in and should be ok hopefully. Thanks for the input mate

Well sump is decided then! The first design will be the go, the only change is instead of having my local tank maker I was looking at aquariums'r'us and for $135 they will do a 48in(H) X 18in(W) X 20in(H). Sure it won't cost a whole lot to put 3 baffles aswell. So gain an extra 2 inches in height.

Planning to get it set in motion on the weekend.

Curious with having the refugium in the sump, and trying to block light leaching into other areas of the sump. what do people do? Is it acrylic, paint, vinyl how?????

example something like this http://www.bunnings.com.au/suntuf-900-x ... t_p1010492

Ive seen people slip black or opaque arcylic in to help minimize light transfer. If its dry atm you coul paint it with safe paint. Cant remember what its exactly called.

As always I ask before using the search function ha! Apparently a few people have had issues with the best paint product peeling and disintegrating years later. Will just use the acrylic to do the baffles. Thanks for your input man

Seem as you are having sump etc in the garage have you considered just having the refugium as a stand alone tank? People generally have a slower flow rate through a refugium if possible

Since this and looking into flow rates, I have decided to come up with this design for the sump now. Shell dimensions are the same however chambers have changed as I have changed my mind on the skimmer. I will be going with a Marine Sources RDC-1800/L skimmer. And it requires more space. I have also put the refugium on the end so I can allow a slower flow rate. And incorporated the reactors into chambers better suited for them.

Image

Dimensions
length - 4ft
width - 1.5ft
height - 1.5ft
1st baffle - 12 inches
second baffle - 15 inches

Sections
Skimmer/ phos reactor - 16 inches
return/ carbon reactor - 10 inches
Refugium - 22 inches
