Additives aren't cures. Just aids

Just started out in the world of marine aquariums? Daunted by all the information, conflicting advice and just wondering what you should do? This is a forum for all of those that are new to the hobby to ask all and any beginner type of questions.

Too many people look for quick fixes instead of getting back to basics and being patient.

While my tank was my ex's baby, dogs are mine and as a trainer and behaviourist it drives me nuts that everyone just wants a quick fix and none have patience. When the dog doesn't behave, you only have the owner to blame

This is a sensitive subject.....

As a rule of thumb yes. If you're a K9 psychologist then you would know that like humans, dogs have their own personalities. As a parent of 3 human children & a Red Cloud Kelpie pup (10mths old), I know that you can guide your child (& dog) in the right direction but some just don't respond like others. Some have stronger personalities & some have a more destructive nature than others. If you spend enough time with a kid or dog it will respond how you want it to but it often comes with a side effect of being somewhat dependent on you. Parents are not to blame for every action a child or dog makes however we are responsible for doing something about it.

But you are right, like aquariums, they require a lot of time & patience & effort to begin with & if you get that right then the future should hopefully be smooth. Persistence & technique is the way.

I think a more equally parallel statement here is to say that as a parent I think it's wrong that psychiatrists give kids "additives" like drugs for ADHD all too often instead of correctly identifying the issue as a lack of discipline & sending the parents off to watch 286hrs of Super Nanny Jo Frost who I'm quite sure has a huge aquarium in her home.

Other than Cal, alk, mag and maybe Str, I'm a fan of letting the water get its supply of stuff like it does on reefs... from algae.

Cal, alk and mag of course come from rock.

Not wrong Santa ... my near 10 yo 500G has gone through about 3 years of pain, no additives to fix, just natural adjustments, good water quality, etc. In th past few months the equilibriums have returned and the sps recovery has been phenomenal. There's no quick fix.
