Great info, thanks.

Am new to the hobby & have received different advice from every aquarium shop worker I have spoken to so far. Everything from "set up a natural live rock, no biological filtration system" to "chemical aditives in your aquarium are your best friend & the way to go".

After the inconsistant advice, my take on it is (perhaps unfortunately) a case suck it & see.

That's one of the benefits of joining your local MASx ... the advice you get from your 'hommies' is invariably good ... and you know then that sucking an orange is a lot better than a lemon (pun ... ;) )

Have to agree totally with you here Scooby my tank would have never got where it was with out this forum.Just a little thing that did bug me was the way some members would answer questions by just saying do a search. The search engine is great but sometimes you can come up with hundreds of responses, personally i thing if you dont have time to give a constructive answer dont bother answering at all.Just my two cents worth.Kean

Got to agree with that Kean, no point giving a half a$$ answer that you have no facts to back it up with, it may quickly send you on the wrong path. Kinda like your talking to an owner of a fish shop. You need the full story/full answer or at least a link to somewhere that gives you the full answer like Dr DBW quite often does.
Thanks

Thanks so much for the words of wisdom. My 9 year old daughter and I currently have one 3fter going well, minimal livestock (a pair of Occelaris clowns, 1 dotty back, a very small blue tang and a flame wrasse) with a few corals.

Initially we recieved so much BAD advice that it was incomprehensible. Everything from "you dont need to cycle more than two weeks before you can add fish" :nono: to "an undergravel filter, pump and rock are all you need in that size tank" :o .... That had me concerned to be honest! We did some research and cycled 8 weeks before introducing our first fish (Flame Wrasse) to our tank.. 6 months on, we have a small happy community and a few thriving softies and acros.

I have just purchased a 6 x 2 x 2.5 tank pre-plumbed with sump etc, pump and powerheads (4 times the capacity of the tank is what was recommended), a 6ft MH and fluoro/actinic combo light (better to get it now than NOT upgrade properly later, right?) and am in the process of purchasing a good quality (Reef Octopus) protein skimmer... I must admit that I still do not understand all the techie side, but I have learnt alot by reading the tank journals and the Seven Habits post you turned into a stickie! There are still some questions I have, but I'm sure that they will be answered in the forums and our tank will not see water until we are fully equipped and prepared!

Thank you for providing a newbie with such invaluable help and advice... Rest assured, someone IS reading...

Danni and Brookey.
