N:P Ratio in Aquaria. Any opinions?

Post by TbyZ »

N:P ratio. Nitrogen to phosphate.

No3 to Po4 values / ratio for coral health / growth. Should we include NH 3/4 & No2 in the N total at their values in a healthy aquarium ?

A nitrate value of say 2ppm, & a phosphate value of say 0.04ppm is a P:N ratio of 50:1

I've started to see a minority / but noisy minority of people suggesting a N:P ratio above 10-14:1 as detrimental to coral health.

Also pushing for higher value Po4,,, above 0.1ppm.

Hans Werner (among other notable figures in the hobby) recommendation is - "In my opinion 0.05 to 0.1 ppm of phosphate is the safest range. You have at least 0.04 ppm range before it is really getting bad.

I'll leave it at that for now & see what you all think.
