New guy on the team from Baldivis W.A.

Post by Thesimpleguy »

Hi guys joined the forum the other day and thought ide drop in to say hi.

Started my first 10G nano reef a few days ago and thought ide keep this thread as a journal of the experience and to gain any advice from you guys along the way.

First thing ive learnt is patience is a virtue with reefing so im taking things slowly to increase the chances of being successful with this.

Grabbed myself some live rock and NSW from a LFS, scaped the tank for a basic view until im happy with a final spot.

Going to let the tank starts its cycle while i do more research and plan.

Ive got a light i had lying round on there atm but plan on upgrading in the coming weeks for when its coral time, next phase is to find an appropriate protein skimmer and get her up and running.

Updates as they happen i guess.

Ive been spenting the week staring at the tank and trying to figure out what my final look will be and noticing more n more hitch hikers.

Ive found these lights that ill be purchasing tomorrow

http://www.nemolight.com/aqualight/aqualight18w.html

Ive got the planted version in my fw fuge and i love it, plants are growing like crazy.

Im looking into stocking it with zoas and a few other corals once i learn more and possibly a mandrin dragonet, though ive read they can be difficult to supply a constant pod diet.
I had an idea to grab some more liverock n crush it to rubble to build a rubble corner up the back in hope the pods can be self sustainable.
Am i hoping for to much? Has anybody had any experience with trying to achieve something like this?
Im still in the early stages so im expecting alot of changes and lessons learnt.

Dropped into the LFS on Thursday and grabbed myself a new light unit, a propper wavemaker and another kg of liverock.

I dunno how effective this is going to be but ive created something im naming the "Pod Hotel" by placing a bunch of broken rock inside an eggcrate cage in an attempt to create a safe place for critters to hide away from future occupants.

Noticed this little bug yestersay, does anybody know what it is and whether its a good or bad hitch hiker?

This waiting game is going to be tougher than expected.

Quick update.
I caught the fever and decided i needed a bigger tank so i went out and brought an aquaone minireef 120 to join the club.
Was getting good results from the test kits and started slowly adding stock.
May have been over excited about the corals but now its stocked ill be holding off while the tank matures more.

FTS as of yesterday

Tomorrow when i get home from the overnight shift tonight ill add more pics and info to my tank journal

Im rather happy with my stock list but still abit iffy on placements to keep everything happy and playing nice.

looking good so far mate!

make sure you have plenty of flow in and around those rocks. its easy to get stagnant water areas which will cause you trouble.

Thanks Brett.

Ive got 2 powerheads in atm. One up the back corner pushing around 5000 lph off the top of my head of flow in a circular motion around all walls which ill have to downsize in the future (i pulled this one out of my 6ft cichlid set up)
and another appropriately sized one up the front to counter and give flow to the front of the rockwall n through the crevices
