Aerobic refers a region having oxygen present (with the oxidation reduction potential >+50 mV.), or an aerobic organism meaning it has an oxygen based metabolism.

Within a reef system, nitrification (conversion of ammonia and nitrite to nitrate) occurs in the aerobic regions (includes surface regions of liverock, sand bed, trickle filter media, i.e. any surface that is in contact with the water).

The absence of oxygen is referred to as anaerobic.

Oxygen will penetrate through approximately 0.5 millimeters of a stationary biofilm.[1]
